Foreign Exchange Facility for Resident/ Non-Resident


Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (hereinafter referred as FEMA) Residents/ Non-Residents are allowed to purchase/ utilize foreign currency notes/ coins for certain specified purposes to the extent of limit prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).


1. Foreign exchange facility for a person resident in India

Purpose Foreign Currency (USD) Indian Rupees (INR)
Travel/ Visit outside India USD 3,000/- per visit to all countries except:
  • - Iraq and Libya- USD 5,000/- per visit
  • - Iran, Russian Federation and CIF states- USD 2,50,000/-
Rs. 25,000/- per person other than visit to Nepal and Bhutan
Haj/ Umrah Pilgrimage Maximum USD 2,50,000/- or up to the cash limit specified by the Haj Committee of India  
Return from travel/ visit from:
A. any place outside India other than Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan & Bangladesh
B. Nepal & Bhutan
C. Pakistan and/ or Bangladesh
  Rs. 25,000/- per person
No limit specified
Rs. 10,000/- per person
Retain in India foreign exchange after return from foreign visit Maximum USD 2,000/-
(Foreign exchange exceeding USD 2,000/- in form of currency notes and travelers cheque should be surrendered within 180 days of return).
 

2. Foreign exchange facility for person resident outside India

Purpose Foreign Currency (USD) Indian Rupees (INR)
Bring into India while Visiting India Upto USD 5,000/-:
  • - If Aggregate value of foreign currency notes is in excess of USD 5000 or
  • - Aggregate value of foreign exchange in form of currency notes, bank notes or traveller's cheque is in excess of USD 10,000 or its equivalent

Then currency must be declared by filing Currency Declaration Form (CDF).

Rs. 25,000/- per person if not a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh and also not a traveler coming from Pakistan and/ or Bangladesh
Take outside India after visiting India Unspent foreign exchange not exceeding the amount brought in by him and declared in CDF Rs. 25,000/- per person if not a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh and also not a traveler going to Pakistan and/ or Bangladesh

3. Miscellaneous

  • No person shall take or send out of India the Indian coins which are covered by the Antique and Art Treasure Act, 1972.

Notes:

  • In case of visit to Nepal or Bhutan, a person resident in India can carry Indian currency notes of denomination Rs. 500/- and/or Rs. 1,000/- up to a limit of Rs. 25,000/-. However, there is no limit on visit to Nepal or Bhutan to carry Indian currency notes of denomination Rs. 100 or below.
  • A person may bring into India from Nepal or Bhutan, Indian currency notes in denomination not exceeding Rs. 100/-.

  • Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Currency) Regulations, 2015.
